2024 FATES Tutorial

We are pleased to announce the 2024 FATES Tutorial which will be held between September 9th and September 13th.  This tutorial is being funded through Next Generation Ecosystem Experiment - Tropics (NGEE-T) project and the Alliance for Tropical Forest Science (ATFS).

The Functionally Assembled Terrestrial Ecosystem Simulator (FATES) is a numerical terrestrial ecosystem model.  Its development and support is primarily supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Science, through the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiment - Tropics (NGEE-T) project.

Goals

In this tutorial, you will:

Who should apply

Anyone with an interest in learning about how they can use FATES in their research is welcome to apply. No prior experience with FATES or other vegetation demographic models is required, but proficiency with Python or R is essential and experience with basic bash is helpful.   Please see the Applications page for more information and to access the link to apply.

Funding

Support this tutorial is made possible through funding and collaboration of the following projects

The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments–Tropics, or NGEE-Tropics, is a ten-year, multi-institutional project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Science, Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER).  NGEE-Tropics aims to fill the critical gaps in knowledge of tropical forest-climate system interactions.

The Alliance for Tropical Forest Science, or ATFS, is a National Science Foundation funded project through the AccelNet program and is a network-to-network collaboration of 11 tropical forest research networks. It's goal is to rapidly advance tropical forest science and help build a new generation of scientists to achieve a more complete understanding of how tropical forests contribute to a healthy, functioning Earth.

Location

Our tutorial will be hosted in-person at Shyh Wang Hall on the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) campus.

Please see the Vistor Information page on NERSC's website for detailed directions on getting to the Berkeley and LBNL.  Additional details regarding site access will be provided to attendees prior to the tutorial event.

Host Land Model

FATES is designed to be run within a host land model.  For this tutorial, we will be running FATES through the land model component of the DOE Energy Exascale Earth System Model.
